PROJECT: Develop a custom database-driven website for Fernkloof Nature reserve to showcase 1800+ plant diversity found in Hermanus, South Africa.

Project Overview

The goal of this project was to develop a robust and scalable botanical database platform capable of managing a large plant collection while providing a simple browsing experience for users.

Built using Joomla with the ZOO database component, the system allows plant records to be structured, categorised, and displayed in a clear and organised format.

The platform enables users to explore plant species through a visual grid layout with detailed item pages containing photographs and botanical information.

The Project

Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus is world-renowned for its incredible biodiversity. The objective was to create a digital “Living Herbarium”—a powerful, searchable database capable of hosting over 1,800 plant species. The goal was to provide researchers, hikers, and botanists with a visual and technical resource to identify, study, and protect the unique Cape Floral Kingdom.

The Solution

We utilized the advanced ZOO CCK for Joomla to build a highly structured, scalable database. Unlike a standard blog, this system was engineered to handle thousands of unique entries, each with its own set of botanical metadata and high-resolution imagery.

Frequently Asked Questions | FAQ's

Why use the Joomla ZOO system for this botanical project?

When managing a collection of over 1,800 items, a standard page-based system becomes impossible to manage. The ZOO system allows us to create a "custom post type" for plants. This means every plant follows the exact same structure, making the data consistent, searchable, and easy for the Fernkloof team to update.

Is it easy for users to find a specific plant out of 1,800 entries?

Yes. We designed the system with "Easy Browsing" in mind. Users can filter by category or use the advanced search function to find a plant by its botanical or common name. The visual grid also allows for quick identification based on what the user is seeing in the reserve.

Can this database handle high-quality photography?

Absolutely. For a botanical database, visual clarity is vital. We use optimized galleries within the ZOO framework that allow for detailed, close-up shots of flowers and leaves while ensuring the site doesn't slow down under the weight of thousands of images.

How does this help with the conservation of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve?

Knowledge is the first step in conservation. By making the herbarium digital, we help the public identify rare species and understand the importance of the Cape Floral Kingdom. It also provides a permanent digital record of the reserve's biodiversity for future generations.

Can this system be adapted for other types of collections?

Definitely. The "Boer maak 'n plan" versatility of the Joomla ZOO system means it can be used for anything from museum archives and library catalogs to large-scale real estate directories or product catalogs.
